Newest Bioshock Infinite video game is 'daringly ambitious' with 'superb storytelling'

What you need to know: The third instalment in the BioShock fantasy video game series has been released in the UK. BioShock Infinite, created by Irrational Games, does not continue the storyline of previous BioShock games, but has similar gameplay and themes. Set in 1912, Infinite focuses on detective Booker DeWitt's mission to rescue a mysterious young woman called Elizabeth from the floating city of Columbia where she has been imprisoned. As they flee, pursued by the city's warring factions, Booker discovers that Elizabeth has supernational powers and holds the key to the city's conflict. The player controls Booker throughout the game, eventually working with Elizabeth. Players use weapons, and Elizabeth's psychokinetic powers, to fight off enemies as they travel across Columbia. What the critics like: This sophisticated shooter is a fabulous example of interactive storytelling, writes Tom Hoggins in the Daily Telegraph. From grandiose action set-pieces to intimate moments and a "gut-punch finale", Infinite is proof positive that games can excel at narrative. "From the moment you're launched into the sky-high dystopia, Bioshock Infinite's vice-like grip takes hold, and won't let you go," says Talal Musa in the Daily Mail. The opening 20 minutes, where the player walks around Columbia like a lost tourist, is one of the most memorable games sequences of recent years. It's "daringly ambitious", says David Jenkins in Metro. It handles serious subjects with elegant care and the art design and characterisation are superb. What they don't like: If you were hoping for the fabled Strong Female Character, you'll be disappointed, says Tom Francis on PC Gamer. Elizabeth is likeable, but she's mostly dependent on the male lead. For further concise, balanced comment and analysis on the week's news, try The Week magazine.
