Guacamelee!: Mexican wrestling video game from Drinkbox Studios is 'brilliant fun'

Bizarre world of Mexican wrestling inspires colourful and entertaining platform game
What you need to know: The Action adventure video game Guacamelee! has been released in the UK. The game is produced by Canadian developers Drinkbox Studios, best known for Tales from Space. Guacamelee! focuses on an underdog Mexican wrestler named Juan Aguacate who attempts to save El Presidente's daughter after she is kidnapped by an evil skeleton called Calaca. The player must switch between The Living World and The Dead World to rescue her. Gameplay in Guacamelee! combines hand-to-hand combat and "platforming", which requires the player to control an avatar as it jumps across platforms or over obstacles. What the critics like: This game is "brilliant and immensely fun", says Erik Kain in Forbes. There's a great mix of mariachi and electronic music, and the combat can get diabolically difficult at times, which makes it all the more rewarding. The bizarre world of Mexican wrestling has inspired "one of the most entertaining action adventures of recent years", says Roger Hargreaves in Metro. It combines a beautifully unique art style, great music and some excellent battles. A beautifully presented world ripe for exploration makes this satisfying brawler game unique among its peers, says Scott Nichols on Digital Spy. "Guacamelee! has as much to teach future games as it has learned from the greats." What they don't like: Bash open this colourful piƱata and you'll find a very traditional and often frustratingly difficult game, says Edge. It's an entertaining romp, but like its wrestler lead, "it's more about the costume than what's beneath it". Subscribe today and get 6 issues completely free. Source: The Week UK............................
