Guiding your tiny Pikmin and exploring gorgeous alien worlds makes for addictive gaming
What you need to know: The latest game in Nintendo's popular series of Pikmin strategy adventure video games has been released in the UK. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, best known for Donkey Kong and Mario, Pikmin 3 has been developed specifically for Wii U game consoles. As in previous Pikmin games, the player commands a colony of tiny alien creatures called Pikmin and uses their unique powers to explore alien worlds, build infrastructure, fight enemies and gather valuable items. In Pikmin 3 a trio of astronauts crash-land on a Pikmin planet. They must harness the powers of the Pikmin to help them repair their ship and harvest fruit to prevent a famine on their home planet. What the critics like The latest Pikmin adventure is "a hoot", says David Phelan in the Sunday Times. Marshalling your Pikmin, dispatching enemies and puzzling out how to explore the hostile world makes for some "highly addictive gaming". Nintendo's Pikmin sequel is delightful, absorbing and adorable, says Ryan Lamble on Den of Geek. "Pikmin 3 is that rarest of things: a game with depth and complexity, but also colour, humour, and Nintendo's seemingly infallible lightness of touch." Pikmin 3 is "an enthralling, near-classic adventure" that will appeal to adults and children in different ways, says Simon Parkin in The Guardian. More than a strategy game, it offers the wonder of exploring the whisper and scurry of small lives rendered in glorious high definition. What they don't like This gentle combination of exploration, strategy and discovery is a delight, but "it's over too soon", says Keza MacDonald on IGN. Pikmin's worlds are gorgeous and intriguing, but there are only four of them before the dramatic final scenario intrudes upon your exploration. Source: The Week UK
